Next month a new face will appear in this column as
we welcome Robert C. Powell III as the new editor of
Virginia Business. Powell comes with a wealth of experience
in business news reporting and editing. For the past
decade, he has been editor of Metro Business, a weekly
business tabloid produced by the Richmond Times-Dispatch
that reports on the people, trends and businesses in
metropolitan Richmond. As an associate business editor
at the paper, Powell also has assisted in coordinating
its business coverage. Before joining the Times-Dispatch
in 1992, he worked as an assistant business reporter
and editor at the Richmond News Leader — the afternoon
competitor to the Times-Dispatch back in the day. And
before that he worked for several newspapers in Georgia,
his native state. So Powell is a veteran when it comes
to preparing an interesting package of business news.
Covering the news in an in-depth, analytical way is
the mission at Virginia Business. Powell is a valuable
addition to our editorial staff, and we know he will
help us get the job done. We are also pleased that former
Senior Editor Bob Burke of Fredericksburg is staying
on in the capacity of contributing editor. Like Powell,
he has years of reporting and editing experience and
is a tough taskmaster when it comes to copy. In fact,
Burke served as the project editor for this month’s
cover story on the state’s
Public-Private Transportation Act. Written by frequent
contributor Lynn Waltz of Norfolk, the story explains
how Virginia’s innovative law is affecting both
road building and road planning.
With a focus on construction
in October, we profile the state’s
largest projects. In another annual feature, we
list Virginia’s top-paid
CEOs. After a couple of years of restraint, CEO
pay is on the rise.
While I won’t anchor this column anymore, I’ll
still be around, managing stories and accompanying reporters
on some of their assignments, one of the highlights
of my work. In what other job could I visit everything
from the office of the U.S. Treasury Secretary to a
pork processing plant? The business world is a fascinating
place, but I’ll never feel the same about sausage!
