The Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia ranked as the 12th best graduate school in North America in a survey conducted by The Wall Street Journal. Darden was among 19 institutions classed as national schools. It also ranked fourth in the country for instruction in business ethics. (Richmond Times-Dispatch, 9/23/04)

Jeffrey Douglas, communications manager for the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, received honors from the Public Relations Society of America with inclusion in its College of Fellows. Responsible for the veterinary school's communications programs, he has been a staff member at Virginia Tech since 1981. (Press release, 9/21/04)

Virginia Commonwealth University received a funding commitment for its Adcenter from The Newspaper Association of America. The NAA pledged a contribution to the Adcenter in the name of the winner of the association's best-in-show award from its annual ATHENA awards honoring the country's best newspaper ads. VCU's Adcenter is a two-year master's program offered in a setting modeled on an ad agency. (Richmond Times-Dispatch, 9/22/04)

The Commonwealth of Virginia received two awards for information technology initiatives from the National Association of State Chief Information Officers. The projects honored were the Wireless E-911 Deployment Project, an upgrade of the ability of emergency personnel to handle calls from wireless phones; and the Virginia Base Mapping Program, a uniform digital image system of every city and county in Virginia to aid in E-911 response, natural resource protection and transportation planning, among other applications. Nine winning entries were selected from 108 nominations submitted by 34 states in the competition. (Press release, 9/22/04)

Communique Conferencing, a McLean-based provider of audio and Web conferencing services, won the 2004 Outstanding Telecommunications Web Site Award from the Web Marketing Association. Judging categories included design, content, technology and innovation. (Business Wire, 9/15/04)

Piascik & Associates, a Richmond tax and financial planning CPA firm, received a 2004 Practice Innovation Award from Practical Accountant magazine. The firm was one of 26 firms nationwide recognized. The award was given for the Piascik Passport program that helps international companies set up operations in Virginia. (Press release, 8/24/04)

Marshall Miller & Associates, a Bluefield engineering firm, received recognition from Engineering News Record as one of the nation's Top 500 Design Firms, ranking 427th among firms with over $20 million in total revenue for engineering design services.
