Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore, a Roanoke law firm, elected to drop its work on insurance litigation in a strategic decision. As a result, the firm has asked seven lawyers and other 14 staff members to leave. Five of the lawyers will form a new firm, Frankl Miller & Webb. The new firm plans to take on the practice of insurance defense and workers' compensation cases previously handled by Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore. (The Roanoke Times, 9/15/04)

Vaughan Furniture, a Galax furniture manufacturer, announced plans to close its facility in Stuart with a loss of 208 jobs. The company cited pressure from competing imports from China for the decision. The company's two plants and distribution center in Galax will continue to operate. (The Roanoke Times, 9/2/04)
