The University of Virginia
Health System received a $6 million, five-year
grant from the National Institutes of Health
to launch a digestive health research center
at UVa. The center will be one of only 16 of

The Carilion Biomedical Institute,
Carilion Health System, the Virginia
Tech Foundation and the University of
Virginia Patent Foundation sold Biophile,
a laboratory freezer business, to TekCel, a
Massachusetts lab automation equipment company.
Biophile, in which the four partners invested
$10 million, developed a 6-foot-tall freezer

Magnetic Technologies Corp.
of Wytheville and Trasfor of Lugano Switzerland,
both designers of transformers for industrial
and commercial use, reached a joint operating
agreement. MTC will manufacture and market transformers
designed by Trasfor in the U.S. while gaining
access to Trasfor technology, which it will

The Henrico County Economic
Development Authority reached an agreement
to open an office in Shanghai, China, in an effort
to encourage partnerships between Chinese firms

Virginia International Terminals, the
operating company for the Port of Virginia,
agreed to a new three-year contract with China
Shipping Container Lines Co., a subsidiary of
the China Shipping Group. China Shipping operates

310 Ltd., a Richmond-based economic
development marketing firm, reached a deal to
provide target industry research and other economic
development services to Mississippi Power, a
unit of Southern Co. that serves 193,000 customers

The United Steelworkers of America Local
8888 approved a new labor contract with
Northrop Grumman Newport News in a 1,877-to-856
vote. The 52-month contract provides for an
average 3.3 percent raise, as well as an increase
in monthly pension benefits and a cap on health-care
premiums. The contract covers 8,500 hourly workers.

American Military University, a provider
of online educational services, reached an agreement
with the Army’s Space and Missile Defense
Command to support a Master of Science degree
in space studies for the command’s space

Virginia has selected the Chicago IT
consulting firm of Gordon & Glickson to
provide strategic advisory services to the Virginia
Information Technologies Agency and other state
bodies. Gordon & Glickson will review and
analyze proposals for technology infrastructure

Nextel, a Reston-based telecommunications
company, signed a sales and marketing agreement
with Science Applications International Corp.
of San Diego. The companies will offer Nextel’s
digital wireless network and products in conjunction

The Egg Factory, a Roanoke developer
of innovative products, entered into an agreement
to develop and launch products with The Clorox
Co. TEF develops products for Fortune 500 companies
either for purchase or license, cutting development

Rhodes Communications of Norfolk was
hired by Iridium Satellite, a satellite communications
company headquartered in Bethesda, Md., to provide
public relations and media consultation services.

MCI, an Ashburn telecommunications company,
reached agreement with Qwest Communications
International to continue providing local telephone
service in 14 western states where Qwest is
the dominant local phone company. MCI will continue
to deliver local service over Qwest’s

The University of Virginia entered into
an agreement with Microsoft Corp. of Redmond,
Wash. and Thomson Learning of Florence, Ky.,
to provide Tablet PCs and software to over 400
students in selected science and math classes.
Under the arrangement, the equipment will allow
students to take notes and do advanced course
