More money could hasten FBI's move to Winchester
Virginia Business
August 2004
Strapped
for storage space, the FBI might be moving its records
to the Winchester area sooner than expected. The agency,
which announced plans in January to build a $10 million
records maintenance complex somewhere in Frederick County
by 2010, got a boost recently when U.S. Rep. Frank R.
Wolf, R-10th, proposed adding $9 million to the 2005
Commerce-Justice Appropri-ations bill, a sum that would
allow the FBI to build a makeshift operation while a
permanent facility undergoes construction. If the bill
is passed, a Wolf spokesman recently told the Winchester
Star, the new FBI site could be up and running within
the next 12 to 18 months. Whether the FBI moves its
records at that point or has to wait until the longer-term
relocation date, the project is expected to bring hundreds
of new jobs to the Winchester area.
