Duke Energy North America of Charlotte, N.C., postponed the construction of a new gas-fired power plant in Wythe County, citing it would make more financial sense to operate it in November 2005. (08/08/03, The Roanoke Times)

Renfro Corp., a sock manufacturer headquartered in Mt. Airy, N.C., plans to eliminate 166 jobs at its Pulaski plant beginning on Oct. 4, due to the soft economy and decrease in the clothing market. (08/05/03, The Roanoke Times)

Pillowtex Corp., a North Carolina-based home fashion products manufacturer, plans to close its plant in Fieldale and all other operations as it files for bankruptcy, costing Henry County approximately 1,000 jobs. (07/31/03, Richmond Times-Dispatch)
