Carilion Health
System has been a major contributor to the Roanoke and
New River Valleys economic development. It is a major
regional player with a network of ten not-for-profit
hospitals, more than 60 physician practices and a managed
care division. In addition, Carilion is the leading
health care provider in the area, employing more than
9,000 professionals serving a population of more than
1 million residents in Western Virginia.
Now, Carilion is getting
even bigger. Earlier this year it launched a major expansion
of the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) and
renovation of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital (CRCH)
to accommodate the growing health care needs of the
area.
Gov. Mark Warner joined
Carilion President and CEO Edward G. Murphy, M.D. in
a groundbreaking ceremony in March for the expansion,
which will include the addition of six operating rooms,
a large medical/surgical care unit, four intensive-care
units and three progressive care units. Additional medical
units capable of sophisticated cardiac monitoring will
be created in the existing CRMH building by replacing
the 13th-floor cafeteria with a food court on the lobby
level, and moving laboratory facilities into a new building
on the Carilion Biomedical Institute campus. Once the
expansion project is complete, CRMH will provide all
non-obstetrical and gynecological adult services.
Renovation at CRCH will
create a facility dedicated to serving the health needs
of women and children. Moving non-OB/GYN beds to CRMH
will create space to renovate and improve pediatric
and women's services. Additional support space will
be created for doctor's nurses and families. The entire
OB service will be enlarged and renovated into a more
family-friendly environment. The renovated Medical Center
for Children will include a 24-hour emergency department
specializing in pediatric care.
It has been estimated
that the economic impact of the project is equal to
building 600 single-family homes. A significant amount
of the materials and supplies will be purchased locally
and the project will employ up to 150 skilled workers.
When complete, the new wing will be staffed with at
least 300 additional healthcare workers.
The expansion will be
supported by a separate project involving the construction
of a 1,000-space parking garage and a child daycare
center across the river from the CRMH site. The garage
and daycare will also help meet the growing needs of
the Carilion Biomedical Institute.
The entire project will
be completed in several phases with an approximate cost
of $55 million.
