The company plans to invest $22 million in a building that will accommodate 300 full-time employees. (Press Release, 05/11/01) Kinder Morgan Power Co. of Houston plans to build a $300 million, natural-gas-fired power plant near the Ante community in southeast Brunswick County. The plant will use hybrid gas-turbine technology and generate up to 550 megawatts of electricity. The plant will employ 25 full-time workers and have an annual payroll of $1.3 million. & Closings Virginia Natural Gas, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based AGL Resources, will consolidate its Newport News-based call center with the parent companys customer-service operations this fall. The 35 or so employees in Newport News have the option to relocate or otherwise lose their jobs. (Daily Press, 06/08/01) TerraShare, an Alexandria-based Web-hosting service and network provider of topic-specific portals, will end its services and shut down after an unsuccessful attempt to find a buyer. (VentureWire, 06/06/01) Lane Company, a subsidiary of Missouri-based Furniture Brands International, will close its Virginia operations in Franklin County including its Rocky Mount-based factory and supply plant. The closing will result in a loss of 550 jobs at the Rocky Mount facilities and 1,000 total jobs statewide. The Virginia division will merge with another Furniture Brands subsidiary, Tupelo, Miss.-based Action Industries Inc. (The Roanoke Times, 06/05/01) Southern States Cooperative Inc., a Richmond-based agricultural cooperative, plans to close 47 of its 233 stores and cut 300 of its 5,000 employees in 25 states.
