Sports Stats Go Digital

Tracking sports statistics is no longer a pencil-and-paper affair.

Richmond-based Score Technol-ogies has developed a hand-held device that digitally records and tracks statistics for coaches, fans and athletes.

mybscore.jpg (11948 bytes)Sports enthusiasts Doug Descalzi, a former GE systems analyst, and entrepreneur Jeff Thomas co-founded Score in 1998. While Thomas provided initial funding, Descalzi, along with family and friends, later pitched in to launch the effort.

The first product line, Statscreen, debuted in March 1999. The Basketball Statscreen compiles statistics such as shooting percentages, turnovers, and points. The 6-by-10-inch hand-held device features custom keypads that guide users to specific screens. It also can be hooked up to a PC. A second generation Basketball Statscreen and the Statscreen Scorecard, which covers baseball, debuted this fall. Score is developing Statscreens for other sports such as football and soccer.

Tossing out the pad and pencil won’t come cheaply — the Statscreens are $549 each and are shipped from the company’s Richmond office. Individuals can order by calling the company directly or by going through one of the company’s team dealers, who distribute to coaches in 42 states.

Descalzi declines to give revenue figures and says he doesn’t have projections of future sales. Nevertheless, the company hopes to knock sales out of the park with a major ad campaign in the game programs for major league baseball and the World Series.
