Cowhide poor choice for December cover

I found your December 1999 cover revolting. I realize that the hide shown on the cover was just that, and not a live cow. But the graphic, in-your-face image of the bloody, burnt, discolored flesh has no artistic value. This is one of the uglier sides of humanity.

I’m not a vegetarian or animal-rights activist. I eat meat, wear leather, share my home with cats, dogs and horses.

If you were out to get my attention, you certainly did, but not in the manner you intended. My reaction wasn’t, "Wow!" but rather, "Yuk!"

This is enough to turn me off to your magazine completely.

Corrections

- Mid Eastern Builders of Chesapeake, with contracts of $58 million, and R.W. Murray Co., with contracts of $55 million, were left off the list of largest general contractors in the February issue.

- KPMG’s top executive is Frank Ross and it is headquartered in McLean. The list of largest accounting firms in the February issue listed the wrong office and top executive.

- BB&T Insurance Services of Richmond, with 200 agents in Virginia, was left off the list of insurance brokers in the February issue.

- William E. "Nick" Carter Jr. is COO of U.Va. Health System, formerly called University of Virginia Hospital. The hospital’s net patient revenues for fiscal year 1997 were $417.3 million. The list of largest hospitals in the February issue listed the wrong information.
