Community Investments

- Augusta County in January finished the first phase of its Augusta Technology Industrial Park on Interstate 81 in Verona.

- Staunton hopes to secure funding for a business park that will be developed this year. The park’s first tenant will be Corporate Herbs, a hydroponic greenhouse.

- The Rockbridge Partnership developed The Rockbridge Area HVACR Training Center in Buena Vista (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration). Planners are building on that model to design a training center for technology fields.

- Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport added Atlantic Coast Airlines/United Express as a carrier for flights to and from Washington Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia. Service begins April 2 with six outgoing and incoming flights daily.

- Friendship Industries, a contract packaging firm in Harrisonburg that hires disabled workers, is using a $700,000 Community Development Block Grant plus other public funding for a new 40,000-square-foot building.

- Investors put $250,000 toward the Artisan Center of Virginia in Waynesboro. In addition to a museum, it will display and sell wares by more than 4,000 crafters.

- Staunton is backing Shenandoah Shakespeare’s effort to construct an authentic indoor Elizabethan playhouse. It’s set to open in May 2001 at a cost of about $2.7 million. Supporters hope it will make the region a destination for Shakespeare fans.
