Personal Wealth: The residents of District 8 have high incomes. Alexandria ranks first in the state in per capita income and seventh nationally at 172.7 percent of the national average. Arlington and Fairfax counties rank in the top 18 in the nation, as well. Prince William County boasts a $73,100 average household income. Quality of Life: Northern Virginia is part of the Washington metropolitan area. Despite the high population density, theres easy access to rural and outdoor activities. In addition to state and regional parks and historic sites, the metropolitan area has cosmopolitan flair and world-class museums, events, professional sports, music and theater. LIABILITIES Public Education: The rapid population increase translates into a need for more schools and other public services. Loudoun County alone expects to add 2,500 students to the roles annually for the near future. Although the quality of education is high now, meeting the increasing demand will pose a challenge. Transportation: Moving people in this densely populated, rapidly growing district is a perennial challenge. One study proposes more than $26 billion in transportation improvements to keep people moving in the district through the year 2020. Gridlock and road rage are a regular part of the news here. |
