| Community Investments - The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority in 1990 committed $2.2 billion to improve Dulles International and Reagan National airports. The investment was $88 million in 1998 alone. Construction included the new terminal at National, new concourses at Dulles, expanded parking at both airports and roadway improvements. - The city of Fairfax is negotiating with developers who want to invest $200 million to redevelop Old Town Fairfax into 800,000 square feet of offices, stores, restaurants, theaters and homes. Part of the negotiations with the Dogwood Development Group and McCaffery Interests includes whether the city will invest $20 million to $30 million in infrastructure such as parking garages and underground utilities. Should the plan gain the city's approval, construction could begin in the spring. - America Online, which employs about 3,500 employees, is building a 225,000-square-foot technology center in Prince William County to house all the equipment and people necessary to operate its online services. The estimated cost of the project is $520 million. The company also is constructing two new buildings on its Dulles campus at a cost of $80 million. - The new Air & Space Museum Annex at Dulles International Airport is set to open in December 2003 at an estimated cost of $238 million. That figure covers not only construction of the 700,000-square-foot structure, but related infrastructure, studies and moving bills. Each year, nearly 10 million people visit the National Air & Space Museum on the mall in Washington, D.C., making it the worlds busiest attraction, and it displays just 10 percent of the museums collection. The new annex will display another 80 percent. |
