A professional football team that will begin play in August 2011 in Virginia Beach has named new leadership.

The team, called the Virginia Destroyers, has named Brain Melekian as senior vice president. Melekian was director of operations for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy from 1998 to 2002, and has 15 years of experience running sports teams and stadiums. The Destroyers will become part of the United Football League, a five-team league that began play in October 2009. Melekian will be responsible for team business and operations, and will also continue with his current role as UFL coordinator, a position he assumed last year.

Former Washington Redskins head coach Marty Schottenheimer will coach the team. He will inherit the roster of the now defunct Florida Tuskers, who were defeated in the league’s championship game in 2009 and 2010.The team will play its home games at the Virginia Beach SportsPlex and will compete against teams from Omaha, Las Vegas, Hartford and Sacramento – all cities that lack NFL teams.
