Gannett names chief digital officer

Gannett Co. has named David A. Payne senior vice president and chief digital officer.

Payne was president and CEO of ShortTail Media Inc., a video ad technology company he co-founded in 2008. He also had a long career at CNN, serving as senior vice president and general manager of from 2004 until 2008, and previously as senior vice president of business operations and development for CNN, and senior vice president and general manager of CNN/Sports Illustrated Interactive.

“David will help us grow and innovate even faster and help us chart a new and exciting direction for our company and the many audiences we serve,” Gannett COO Gracia Martore said in a statement.

McLean-based Gannett, which publishes USA Today, has grown its digital business 44 percent in the last two years. Digital revenue is almost $1 billion, or 18 percent of Gannett’s total revenue. In addition to the websites of its newspapers and television stations, its digital portfolio includes PointRoll, a leader in rich media advertising, and ShopLocal, which provides multichannel shopping and advertising services.
