Carnell Construction Corp., of Martinsville, won a $3 million damages award from the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority in a federal jury trial over a claim of racial discrimination. (Danville Register & Bee)  

CBN Secure Technologies plans to expand its identification card manufacturing facility in Danville, creating 25 jobs. CBN, based in Ottawa, will spend $1.1 million to add new products to the operation. Fourteen employees currently work at the plant.  It manufactures driver’s licenses and identification cards for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. ( 

New College Institute has been the focus of several state universities exploring the possibility of making the Martinsville facility a branch campus. George Mason, Radford, Virginia State, Virginia Commonwealth and Old Dominion universities have all expressed interest in associating with New College Institute. (Martinsville Bulletin)  

Pittsylvania County was granted a Virginia Enterprise Zone designation from the state to allow for the use of state and local incentives for job creation and to promote private investment. Norfolk was the only other locality to receive approval for an enterprise zone. (News release)   

TRIP, a national transportation group, rated completion of a four-lane U.S. 58 between Stuart and Hillsville 11th, and the development of Interstate 73 through Henry, Franklin and Roanoke counties 14th, on a list of 50 road projects needed to support economic growth in Virginia.  (Martinsville Bulletin)
