Surry County is open and ready to do business
Surry County is open and ready to do business. Located
directly across the James River from historic Jamestown,
Surry is midway between Richmond and Hampton Roads.
This location puts Surry within an hour’s drive
of more than a million state residents and within a
day’s drive of half the population of the United
States.
The international airports at Richmond and Norfolk
and the seaport terminals of Richmond and Hampton Roads
are all within an hour’s drive. If your business
involves transportation, our close proximity to The
Port of Virginia offers unique advantages.
The county has developed a 200-acre industrial park.
We are pleased to announce the location of the Windsor
Mills manufacturing facility. Available sites remaining
in the industrial park range from two to 50 acres. The
park is located within a U.S. HUB Zone.
Surry has a progressive, pro-business Board of Supervisors,
an active Industrial Development Authority and is served
by several regional business development programs. These
programs can provide a variety of business assistance
services, including some financial assistance. Eligible
businesses in the county can make applications for direct
loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural
Business Loan Program.
The county’s work force is reliable and highly
capable. Many of the workers here commute out of the
county to technical and highly skilled jobs but would
rather work in Surry.
Surry’s public schools are among the best in
the state. Their modern facilities boast electronic
classrooms and some of the most sophisticated teaching
aids available. Each year, approximately 90 percent
of the graduating class continue their education at
the post-secondary level. And talk about school spirit
— the Surry High School football team won the
state’s Group A/Division I state championship
for two of the past eight seasons. They also won the
state single A basketball championship in 2005.
Surry invites you to experience its quality of life.
In 2007, the county will help its neighbor, Jamestown,
observe its 400th anniversary. The county’s history
includes sites that date back to the time of Captain
John Smith and Pocahontas. The county also has more
than 30 miles of frontage on the James River, woodland
teeming with wildlife, and is home to Chippokes Plantation
State Park. Its citizens are good-hearted people with
strong work ethics. A visit to Surry will show you why
“Surry Is Something Special.”
